DR. MARK HOUK - PRACTICE FOUNDER
Houk Chiropractic was founded on December 31, 1981, when Dr. Mark Houk opened his practice, inspired by his own journey with back pain following a high school football injury. His experience with chiropractic care fueled his mission to help others find relief from spine-related issues without drugs or surgery, restoring the body’s natural function. At chiropractic college, Dr. Houk developed a passion for anatomy and physiology, which shaped his approach: understanding the body’s design, identifying problems, and helping patients recover through drug-free methods. This commitment to healing has been the driving force behind Houk Chiropractic.
Initially located at Wall and Joseph, this modest space quickly became too small as more patients sought his expertise in back pain relief and wellness. Driven by his passion and commitment to helping others, Dr. Houk's practice rapidly grew, prompting him to search for a larger space that could accommodate the increasing demand.
In February of 1989, Dr. Henning joined the team, marking the beginning of a successful partnership. With a shared vision, they moved to a larger facility at 3809 N. Monroe Street. Guided by Dr. Houk’s philosophy, “You receive by giving and not by getting,” they dedicated themselves to providing exceptional chiropractic care to the Spokane community. Over time, Houk Chiropractic expanded to become a multi-provider practice with multiple chiropractors and massage therapists working across two locations at Spokane’s Northpointe and Monroe locations.
Beyond local care, Dr. Houk’s commitment to wellness has reached international communities. Along with his brother Dan, Dr. Houk has participated in humanitarian missions to Ghana, West Africa, where they provided chiropractic care, trained local practitioners, and shared health knowledge to promote long-term wellness.
Today, Houk Chiropractic & Medical Massage is a trusted provider in Spokane, with a team committed to helping people live more active, pain-free lives. For over 43 years, Houk Chiropractic has empowered patients to improve their quality of life by supporting their health goals, enabling them to enjoy the activities they love across our beautiful Pacific Northwest. DR. JAY SHERRELL - PRACTICE SUCCESSOR
Dr. Jay Sherrell, successor of Houk Chiropractic, brings a lifelong dedication of sports, wellness, and recovery to the practice. Growing up in Spanaway, WA, Dr. Sherrell spent his youth as an athlete, experiencing firsthand the critical need for effective healing and injury management. He recognized early that success in sports—and in life—relies on the ability to stay strong and perform consistently. The athlete who can play through a season is more likely to succeed, a principle that Dr. Sherrell believes applies just as well to everyday life. Whether it’s being present with family, succeeding at work, or enjoying hobbies, our well-being is key to sustaining high performance in all we do.
With a focus on managing musculoskeletal health, Dr. Sherrell has seen that maintaining functionality and managing conditions are central to living a fulfilling, productive life. He advocates that those who proactively manage their physical well-being will be able to "play" for the long haul, whether it’s a season, a quarter, or a year. Chronic pain, migraines, and injuries can impede our ability to engage fully in life, but with the right approach, these challenges can be managed effectively.
